Labour will Labour will keep things simple - David Shearer

If you're running a business, you'll want to vote Labour in September because we have a solid plan to make it easier to do business in New Zealand.

Since 2008 there's been a big decline in the number of small businesses starting up in New Zealand - an average of 2500 fewer every year.

That's a problem, because small businesses grow into the big businesses our country depends on.
That's why Labour has a suite of policies aimed at modernising our economy and enabling our businesses to grow and flourish.

We're the proven economic managers: since 1935 the annual average GDP growth rate under Labour governments has been 3.7%, while under National it's been 2.9%.

Labour recently announced plans to upgrade New Zealand's 25-year-old monetary policy, preserving the good things about the current system and improving it for the 21st century.

Working with this, Universal Kiwisaver will provide a pool of investment that businesses can draw on to expand and export, upping our national income.

Australia has $1.5 trillion in their universal workplace savings. We are already 25 years behind them and playing catch-up. Universal KiwiSaver will mean everyone will be better off because we will not only have a low interest rate and fair exchange rate regime, but everyone will have their own savings nest egg as well.

Small-business owners will be relieved to hear we're also looking at ways to simplify the tax system because our small businesses are spending too much time and money on complicated tax compliance. If small business owners could simply and easily do their taxes, they'd be able to focus on what they do best: contributing to the economy.

A capital gains tax will encourage people to invest in productive New Zealand businesses rather than speculating on property (this tax will exclude the family home).

We'll give tax breaks to businesses that invest in research and development, encouraging breakthroughs and innovations we can market to the rest of the world.

The New Zealand of the future will require an energetic, high-skills workforce so our young people are central to our plans: we'll get them into work, education or training.

National is the party of big business, not small and medium business. When they introduce additional compliance like requiring employers to collect child support, it's easy if you have an HR department, but every small business-owner knows the true cost of that kind of regulatory creep. Labour will keep things simple.

We're a hardworking and smart nation that deserves an efficient economy, so our businesses can flourish and leave a legacy of prosperity for the next generation. That's what Labour will deliver.
