A 53-year-old man has been arrested in Christchurch after allegedly approaching schoolgirls in the Merivale and St Albans area and offering them money in exchange for inappropriate favours, reported RNZ.
Police first received reports of the man’s behaviour on 4 August, with several further incidents reported in the following days. Local schools were alerted to the situation through a safety letter issued to parents and staff.
According to a report by RNZ, On Tuesday, police confirmed the man had been taken into custody and charged with breaching his release conditions. He is expected to appear in the Christchurch District Court.
Detective Constable Andrea McDowell stated that the arrest was made possible by vital information provided by the public, RNZ reported.
“We want to thank the community for their caring response and for providing the information that helped us to identify the man,” McDowell said. “Reports like this are concerning, and we hope the arrest brings some comfort to the community,” reported RNZ.
She added that the incident serves as a reminder for parents to talk with their children about safety when travelling to and from school. She urged anyone who feels unsafe or witnesses suspicious behaviour to call 111 immediately, RNZ reported.
