Fusion: A musical experience of a life time

Music is a language that express emotions and moods connecting people from different walks of life .Ustad Fazal Quereshi , a world renown table maestro and Ustad Dilshad Khan, a soulful Sarangi artist, have joined in a unique fusion of classical and jazz music to connect with the artists and people of New Zealand. The duo will be sharing stage with Jazz artists, Jim Langabeer on flute and sax, Ben Fernandes on key board , Jo Shum, Guitar and Mark Pinto de Menezes on drums.
Talking to Fazal Quereshi about this unique amalgamation with these artists from different genres of music he said, “It’s interesting, reason being we haven’t played with the musicians prior to this. And with the rehearsal we have had with them it seems quite nice considering we are tackling the great Jazz composers like Chick Corea, whose piece we are going to play and also Kenny Garrett. Doing compositions like this makes it easier to connect with the audience and makes it more interesting for them to see how a tabla and a Sarangi would fit into such Jazz compositions. Besides these, Dilshand and I are doing our own compositions. This amalgamation with different genres and moods of music and also considering the amazing artists we will be playing with, makes the fusion very interesting”
Dilshad Khan who is visiting New Zealand and playing with the artists for the first time said “It is an honor to me to play with Ustadji (quoting Fazal Qureshi) and this is the first time I’m playing with him. Apart from that it is a great pleasure to play with the other Musicians of New Zealand. It is not difficult or hard when it comes to playing such a concert. But one has to always think about ways to connect with the artist who is playing by our side. With the strong music foundation we have it becomes very easy.”
Being from a very strong music lineage the artists, Fazal Quereshi and Dilshad Khan have carried the demands and expectations of their respective families all through their musical journey. “One cannot escape the expectations that are tagged along when you have such a strong music background. And with the kind of family name I’m attached to I’m in fact carrying the burden of expectations for a very long time. It has a dual edge to it, when I started as a performer in my earlier days if the performance went fine people would say good things tagging me to my family and if the concert did not go well as expected then again I was tagged to my family saying being the son of Allah Rakka and brother of Zakhir Hussain, he shouldn’t be playing this way. But on the other hand it has helped me improve because I took it as an incentive to improve further. Thankfully that comparison doesn’t happen these days as I have established my own style,” said Fazal when asked about the demands and expectations.
Dilshad Khan who brings in the essence of Rajasthani music to the concert expresses that “Rajathani folk music, like any other music, conveys the emotions of the people of Rajasthan. It speaks about the walks and talks of the life in Rajasthan. Panihari, Kesaria Balam, Bayariya and Ghumar (dance), all these express different feelings and emotions from romance, happiness, and the day to day life of people from Rajasthan. Since I’m born listening to these songs, it is easier for me to sing or play these songs.”
Combining music of different genres requires a very strong foundation and practice. The artists agreed that understanding the genre artists makes it easier to blend well and connect with the other artists. Likewise, they also advised that it is very important to practice to achieve perfection
This concert is another brilliant experiment to show how music can bring people from different parts of the world together. With artists of such high caliber and experience this concert is certainly going to be a treat to music lovers.
The concert is held on the 9th of August , 7:00 pm at the Raye Freedman Arts Center, Silver Road Epsom. For tickets contact Greg Booth on 021-02294720 or Ram Iyer-09-2133868
