Music legends celebrated in Auckland

A musical treat awaits Bengali music lovers in Auckland next week.

The Probasee Bengalee Association of New Zealand will be celebrating its annual event, Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya, on the evening of Sunday, June 15, at the Spotlight Theatre in Papatoetoe.

The musical evening will celebrate the works of first Indian Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, and the great Bengali and national poet of Bangladesh, Kaji Nazrul Islam.
Both Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam as we know are household names for every Bengali and are the foundations of Bengali culture.
Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse”, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" still mesmerise everyone.
He is regarded as the most outstanding creative artist of the modern Indian subcontinent, being highly commemorated in India and Bangladesh.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was a poet, writer, musician, revolutionary and philosopher. Popularly known as Nazrul, his poetry and music espoused Indo-Islamic renaissance and intense spiritual rebellion against fascism and oppression. Nazrul's impassioned activism for political and social justice earned him the title of the The Rebel Poet. His musical compositions form the avant-garde genre of Nazrul geeti (Music of Nazrul). Accomplishing a large body of acclaimed works through his life, Nazrul is officially recognised as the National Poet of Bangladesh and highly commemorated in India and Bangladesh
Rehearsals are in full swing at the moment and the group promises to deliver a fantastic production with close to 40 singers from all age groups involved.
Probasee will pay tribute to these two great Indians by performing their works - “Shayama”: a dance drama of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore followed by a skit based on Tagore’s poems, a programme based on Nazrul’s songs accompanied by dances and another programme based on Tagore’s songs and dances.
“All are most cordially invited to join in venerating these great poets and literary men and enjoy their songs, poetry and dance performed by able and enthusiastic members of Probasee Bengalee Association,” group spokesman Santanu Ghosh said.
Event: Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya. Venue: Spotlight Theatre, Tavern Lane, Papatoetoe, Auckland (adjacent to Alan Brewster Centre). Date: Sunday, June 15, at 5pm.
Entry is free.
