Paresh - An Artiste Beyond Compare

Paresh - An Artiste Beyond Compare

Everyone knows Paresh Rawal as a Bollywood clebrity comedian. But few know that
this master actor is also a great theatre actor, mostly doing plays in Gujrati. Now he
comes to Auckland with the latest comedy play – Krishan vs Kanhaiya.

A National Award as well as multiple Filmfare awards winner, he has enthralled us with
his performances for over 25 years. Over the past decade he has tickled our funny bones
to the limit

Paresh Rawal, who returns to the theatre scene after a long gap with his play Kishan
Vs Kanhaiya, has stand-up comedy next on his agenda. “I would love to do a stand-
up comedy show, if I find a good script for it. We asked him why it took him so long
to return to theatre and he says, “I haven’t been away from the stage. I have been
performing abroad and in other cities. The play, Kishan Vs Kanhaiya, has travelled to
various cities over 100 times. The actor and his team are currently on a tour to Australia
and New Zealand.

“I love the comical manner in which the script was written. Though it’s a serious subject,
I make sure it’s not difficult to digest,” says Paresh, adding that, “It’s not a mindless
comedy. It will make you think as well as laugh. It’s about an atheist’s battle with God.”

Although it encourages the audience to challenge the status quo and ‘know’ why rituals
and rites are performed, it ends on a neutral note. The script leaves the intelligent
audience to conform to his or her own beliefs without forcing him or her to take a
stand. To that extent, it is open-ended in its message, but it is not open-ended in the
communication. The communication is clear – ‘know thyself’ – and know what you are
doing, and why. If not for the laughs that it is guaranteed to give you for the time that
you are inside the theatre, watch it for the fact that it might make you challenge some of
the things you say or do every morning.

The play and the Gujarati comedy, which Kishan Vs Kanhaiya has been adapted from,
are both directed by Umesh Shukla. Paresh’s wife, Swaroop Sampat, has produced it.
