Flute legend here next month

South Indian flute legend Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar will perform two concerts in Auckland next month.
Smt Sikkil Mala will perform on Friday, May 6 (at a venue yet to be decided) and also on Saturday, May 7 at Selwyn College.
She will be accompanied on the violin by Sri H N Bhaskar and on the mridangam by Sri Palladam Ravi, organiser Priya Srinivasan of Rasikas NZ said.
“Rasikas NZ is extremely honoured and proud to present the flute concert of Smt Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar, daughter and niece of the well known Sikkil Sisters, Smt Kunjumani and Smt Neela,” Ms Srinivasan said.
On May 6, Smt Sikkil Mala will present a lecture/multimedia presentation and a concert on May 7.
Smt Sikkil Mala was born to a musical family. She started learning from her aunt and mother Sikkil sisters Kunjumani and Neela.
In playing style, Smt Sikkil Mala combines the strongest aspects of both Aunt Kunjumani's clear classic lines with Mother Neela's flair and expressiveness.
Mala imbibed through her mothers the flute artistry of their peternal uncle, Azhiyur Narayanaswamy Iyer and the rigorous rhythmic training given by their mrudungam playing father, Azhiyur Natesa Iyer.
Other major influences on Mala's playing are the expertise and repertoire of noted vocalist and teacher Radha Vishwanathan and of Radha's mother and guru MS Subbulakshmi whose family Mala joined by marriage.
Born in a reputed musical family on 23 August 1963, Mala started learning flute at the age of five from her mother and aunt.
Tickets for the Auckland concerts priced at $25, $15, and $10: available from: Sankar 579 1556; Padma 624 5922; Mervin 278 2900; Priya 416 0165. Email: rasikas.nz@gmail.com
