Bar bar dekho – I am ‘not’ the bar dancer this time!

TV star Narayani Shastri insists that ‘Na Ghar Ke Na Ghaat Ke’ released last week is her filmy ‘debut’ ! Was she trying to conceal that she has played a striking bar-dancer role in Bhandarkar’s ‘Chandni Bar’ (2001) ? Meanwhile she denies that she is ‘going steady’ off-screen with her movie hero Rahul Aggarwal.

Sensuous TV star and film actress Narayani Shastri is being hyped all over the media for her “Hindi film debut” with producer-director-actor Rahul Aggarwal’s rural-urban culture-shock comedy ‘Na Ghar Ke Na Ghaat Ke’ . What is intriguing that the same Narayani has made her discreet yet striking acting debut in Madhur Bhandarkar’s award-winning bold movie ‘Chandni Bar’ (2001). When confronted, the bubbly Shastri admits to it.

“Yes, its true that I have performed a striking supporting role in ‘Chandni Bar’.As the sultry bar-dancer in that movie, it was an honour to work with National Award winning director Madhur. Later on, I have even played one of the leads with co-star Nana Patekar in a Marathi movie ‘Pak Pak Pakaak’ . But I still maintain that ‘Na Ghar Ke..’ is my actual debut-launch in Hindi movies as the romantic lead,” shrugs Narayani tossing her tresses.

Considering she is so fastidious about her selection of roles even in the string of TV serials that she has acted in, how come she agreed to act in ‘NGKNGK’ ? “My lead debut is absolutely by default. That’s because I was originally only the production designer designing the clothes, sets etc. Dozens of aspirant girls whom we screen-tested just did not fit the bill.

Ultimately, Rahul’s father T P Aggarwal insisted that I would be the perfect choice. In fact, originally, even Rahul was not supposed to be playing the hero. It was Paresh Rawal, who plays a cop in the movie, who compelled director Rahul to cast himself as the naïve, rustic ‘aam aadmi’ lead character,” she clarifies. Rather quirky is the fact that while in ‘Chandni Bar’ she played a raunchy bar-dancer, in ‘Na Ghar Ke..’ she is put behind bars by the cops who mistake the newly-wed bride a demure gharwalli-with-her-ghunghat to be a soliciting ‘bar-girl’! “It’s as if I have turned a ‘full circle’. Call it bar bar dekho,” quips the actress.

Wasn’t the dusky Shastri babe perturbed over the nagging gossip about her “off-screen romantic fling” with co-actor Rahul Aggarwal who convincingly plays her ‘husband’ ! She chuckles. “Hey listen, I am always being linked with almost all my male co-stars. Thankfully I am used to it and have become immune. As always I am still an independent single girl. By the way, I shall be flying shortly to New York and Boston for a month-long vacation with my close ‘female’ friends.Who knows, I may even sign on a cross-over flick while in the US,” she signs off.

Meanwhile hero Aggarwal is optimistic as he feels he has ‘a winning title that too in pure Hindi’. “These days with almost all Bollywood movies with angrezi movie titles like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Wake Up Sid’ and ‘Hide and Seek’, we hope to connect with the masses with ‘Na Ghar Ke…’, he laughs
