Aamir Khan resigns over copyright row

Here is yet another Aamir Khan controversy. The Bollywood perfectionist has stepped down from a panel of the government to recommend amendments to the Copyright Act after a spat with lyricist Javed Akhtar.

According to reports, the actor picked up an argument with Javed Akhtar on the issue at a meeting and sent his resignation to Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal, who had convened the meeting.

The duo quarrelled over royalties and credit to the writers with Javed Akhtar reportedly alleging that Aamir was trying to deny the writer his/her due. Aamir allegedly said artists like songwriters should also get the credit and royalty of a popular song since they make the songs popular.

Khan in his resignation letter said: "I feel I have a lot to contribute to the ongoing debate but I cannot make any meaningful contribution in this atmosphere. Aggression of this type leaves me feeling very disillusioned and sad and I am unable to function.”

“Therefore I request you to accept my resignation from this committee and please appoint another person in my place. I believe that amendments to the Copyright Act are long overdue," read his statement on NDTV.

The committee is reviewing the Copyright Act and it is mooted that royalties would be provided to artists like music directors and composers.

The Union Cabinet approved the suggestions and the new Act is expected to be introduced in the next session of Parliament, according to media reports.
