NZ doctors to provide advanced training to Fiji medical personnel

Medical personnel at the Lautoka Hospital will receive advanced training from specialists brought in by the Friends of Fiji Health Trust (FOFH) who arrived in the country yesterday.

Apart from a unique opportunity for local gynaecologists and obstetricians in the west to receive specialised training, the team from FOFH New Zealand will also send specialists to Labasa to train doctors in the Northern Division.

Led by former Fiji resident and resident gynaecologist and fertility specialist with Fertility Associates in New Zealand, Doctor Sunil Pillay, the team will conduct advanced training for gynaecologists on equipment given to the Lautoka Hospital during a visit last year.

"I am very pleased for the people of Fiji and excited that this has been made possible through FOFH," he said.

Dr Pillay said his team was working with local institutions to conduct the specialised training.

"It has always been the vision of FOFH to develop the capacity of Fiji's health system in addition to complementing it with our medical and surgical missions."

"This mission takes a giant step towards achieving that goal.

"We are working in partnership with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology departments at Lautoka Hospital, and the Medical School through the Fiji National University.

"We will be conducting teaching sessions at the university and practical sessions at Lautoka Hospital where we have installed the laparoscopic tower."

Friends of Fiji Health [NZ] Inc

Background

  • FOFH is a NZ registered Charitable Trust which was incorporated in July 2010 under the Charitable Trust Act 1957. The Trust is administered by 6 Medical Specialists and 7 Non-medical Professionals - all formerly from Fiji.

The main objectives of the Trust are as follows:

  • "To establish a volunteer medical team of Specialist Doctors, Nurses, Therapists, Psychologists, Dentists, Optometrists, Anaesthetist Technicians and without limiting to any other or all types of healthcare, medical and surgical fields to travel to Fiji from time to time to provide free Healthcare, Medical and Surgical complementary and/or supplementary services within the existing framework at any Fiji public based hospital to the needy citizens of Fiji. To provide training and education to the local healthcare providers in Fiji, and wherever possible, provide healthcare, medical and surgical equipment and instruments to Fiji hospitals."

Medical Missions since inception.

  • Since its inception, FOFH has sent 4 medical missions to Fiji covering the districts from Sigatoka to Rakiraki. During these missions the doctors have seen and treated in excess of 1,000 patients of which some 100 would be classified as major cases. The Specialists have also spent in excess 200+ man-hours doing Respite work, Lectures and Tutorials on the use of Laparoscopic and other instruments.FOFH has also assisted in the upgrade of one of the operating theatres and installed a "near new" Laparoscopic Tower [donated by Gilles Avenue Hospital, Auckland] in Lautoka hospital.

2012 Missions

  • FOFH is committed to sending three medical missions to Fiji during the 2012 calendar year to do the following: FOFH Gynaecology Team will be in Fiji from 23-29th June. They will carryout Laparoscopy Workshop in conjunction with Fiji National University. This will become a regular Post-graduate teaching contribution by FOFH under the leadership of our Chairman Dr Sunil Pillay. Besides teaching, a Gynaecology team will also conduct Clinics, Gynaecological Surgeries and Respite work both in Lautoka and Labasa hospitals. FOFH Medical Specialist Physicians/Specialist Stroke Rehab/Gastroenterologist Team will travel to Fiji at around August/September. They will be based in Lautoka Hospital and will also cover the western district hospitals. FOFH Specialist General Surgical Team will be in Fiji in October to carry out Complex Surgical Work, Respite, Teaching and Tutorials.

Two valuable points worth noting about FOFH
1. For every ONE DOLLAR that FOFH raises, on average, it is providing EIGHTEEN DOLLARS worth of medical
services to Fiji.
2. FOFH runs on ZERO ADMINISTRATION COST - the trustees meet this cost from their own pockets.
