Fiji, China ink rural development deal

Suva: Fiji and China have signed an agreement for development in several provinces of both main islands of the country.

Chinese Ambassador Han Zhiqiang and Fiji Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama inked the deal on December 22 for development works in Vanua Levu, Naitasiri, Nadroga and Ba. Most of the works will be carried out in 2011.

Commodore Bainimarama said the Fiji government had always been grateful to China for its contribution toward Fiji’s economic development.

“Today marks a very significant milestone in the history of the bilateral relations between our two countries,” he said after the signing the agreement.

“Significant is the fact that we have once again endorsed and formalised a framework agreement that will allow a Chinese government concessional loan package to upgrade major road infrastructure on our two main islands.”? ?

Roads that will be upgraded are the Natewa coastal road from Nagigi to Bagasau junction, Sawani-Serea road from Naqali to Vunidawa, the Sigatoka Valley road to Keyasi government station and the Moto road in Ba. ? ?

“I thank the government of the Peoples Republic of China and her people for their continued support and assistance,” he added.? China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Dr Han Zhiqiang said China would continue to help Fiji because they felt Fiji could contribute a lot to the region.? “The Chinese government is a true friend of Fiji as we believe that Fiji plays an important role in the Pacific,” he said.? ?
