NZ DONATES EQUIPMENT TO BUREAU OF STATS

Information technology equipment donated by NZ Aid was handed to the Bureau of Statistics in Suva this week.

The Ministry of Lands acting permanent secretary Mr Filimoni Kau said the equipment would assist in the set up of a Geographical Information System project to link all 2007 data to GIS bases and create a spatial representation of various socio economic analysis which would indicate standard of living and poverty status in Fiji.

“This highlights the need for the agencies in Government to share not only knowledge and skills but also equipment with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a more comprehensive approach to managing our land resources,” Mr Kau said when handing over the equipment.

Chief Statistician Mr Epeli Waqavonovono received the donation on behalf of the Bureau.

“The equipment will help the Bureau of Statistics data gathering of income and expenditure survey in Fiji, which started in September this year and is scheduled to be completed in June next year.”Mr Waqavonovono said.

Mr Waqavonovono thanked the Ministry of Land for their continuous support to the GIS project, which
they were working on to enable planners to identify areas where poverty was concentrated in Fiji.

Cabinet, in February this year approved for the Bureau of Statistics to conduct the 2010-2011 employment and unemployment data survey.

The Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama earlier this year commented that the availability of such information would allow Government to better address the development and utilisation of human resources in the country.
