Friends of Fiji fund new theatre

Lautoka: The Lautoka Hospital has a newly-renovated operating theatre prepared and funded by the Friends of Fiji medical team.

Chief guest at the opening ceremony was Health Ministry deputy secretary hospital services Doctor Eloni Tora.

The former storage room was first converted into an anaesthetic room but now has been transformed into a surgical operating room.

"We are happy to have been given this opportunity to give back to Fiji. We also have a lot planned for our trip," said the Friends of Fiji medical team's chairman Dr Sunil Pillay.

They will also be renovating other wards and areas in the hospital in the near future, among them the Emergency Room.

Since the team's arrival last month, they have successfully operated on 35 patients where 20 were major and five minor surgeries.

"We operated on women who were suffering from gynaecological ailments."

Dr Pillay, who migrated 23 years ago to New Zealand and is originally from Narewa in Nadi, aims to conduct more surgeries this week before they depart.

"This is not a numbers game though. What we try to provide is quality services but we have operated on quite a number since we arrived. And if we could somehow combine the two then we would be in a great position," said Dr Pillay.
