26/11 terrorists’ bodies buried secretly

Mumbai: The nine unclaimed bodies of the 26/11 Pakistani terrorists were disposed of in a top secret manner, Maharashtra Home minister R R Patil said Tuesday.

“There was no apparent reason to keep preserving the bodies for a longer time. So, we took the decision to go for a secret burial,” Patil told matter-of-factly to the state legislative council.

The decision was also prompted by the huge expenditure incurred for preserving the bodies and ensuring round-the-clock security at the JJ Hosptial here, where the bodies were kept in a sealed morgue.

Patil, however, did not reveal the details of date and place of the burial.

The nine terrorists were gunned down by Indian security forces during the three-day siege of landmark areas in Mumbai in November 2008.

The lone terrorist who was captured alive, Ajmal Amir Kasab, also a Pakistani, is facing trial before a special court.

Muslim organsiations had refused burial rights to the slain terrorists, maintaining that they were not true followers of Islam.

The Indian government had also written to Pakistan to take the bodies, but no response was received from across the border.

The 10 terrorists had killed 166 people in a series of coordinated attacks at luxury hotels, train terminal, a hospital and a Jewish residence quarter.
