Religious leaders protest noise pollution

Bereilly: Hindu and Muslim religious leaders came forward against the noise pollution in the name of religion and tradition here on Monday.
Addressing a press conference organised by Satya Foundation in Bareilly, Shabbu Miyan Niyazi of the Khankahe Niyazia and Mahant Kamal Nayan Das of Tulsi Math (monastery) said noise pollution is a global problem and if not addressed properly, it will engulf the entire humanity, a release said.
They said that noise pollution in the name of religion and tradition is a heinous crime and the police and administration must book such offenders under the various provisions of the I.PC and the Environment Protection Act.
According to them, no religion allows the use of so much sound that it disturbs the peace and quiet of an area. Unfortunately, for some people, religion has become a show business and the use of loudspeakers creates problems for people in the vicinity. The said loud noise could create anxiety, depression, blood pressure and even cancer.
Mahant Kamal Nayan Das of Tulsi Math categorically said that the ideal time for marriage is Godhuli Bela (sunset time), but nowhere in the religious texts it is written that you can make noise when the other people are sleeping.
The Centre and the state governments must take strong legal action against the people involved in any kind of noise. And it is the duty of religious leaders to ensure that there is not noise from places of worship between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and even during the other hours, they should ensure that the level of noise is so within reasonable limits, the religious leaders observed.
Speaking on the occasion, the Satya Foundation Secretary Chetan Upadhyaya thanked the religious leaders.
“I hope that the message will be well received by the people, the police and the administration. I hope India will start using I.PC 268, 290 and 291 apart from the Environment Protection Act, against noise offenders,” he said
