Sachin, Rao receive Bharat Ratna

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday conferred Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, to iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and scientist Professor CNR Rao here.

Tendulkar, who retired from cricket last year, became the first sportsman to get the award.

Adding another feather to his crown, he also became the youngest person to receive the Bharat Ratna.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi were among those who attended the event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented Bharat Ratna to Prof. CNR Rao and Shri Sachin Tendulkar today (February 4, 2014) at a Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan," the President's Secretariat said in a statement.

"Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were the Vice President of India, Prime Minister of India and Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairman, UPA and senior Ministers of the Government," read the statement.
