Delhi rape accused tortured: Lawyer

New Delhi: As the in-camera trial of the Delhi gang rape and murder case began on Thursday and five of the six accused were brought to the Saket court here, one of the suspect's lawyers said the men were being tortured by cops in jail to make them conform to their collected evidence, media reports said.

Reports said of the five accused, four have got a group of three lawyers to represent them while one is still without a lawyer.

Most lawyers, including of Saket Bar Association, have refused to represent them.

According to an NDTV report, ML Sharma, one of the lawyers who came forward to represent the accused, has alleged that police were using third degree methods to make the accused make statements that conform to their evidence.

The case is expected to be transferred to a fast-track court soon which was inaugurated recently.

One of the six accused is an underage boy and hence he would be tried by a juvenile board.

On Monday, the court had ordered an in-camera trial and restrained media from publishing the proceedings.

Three of the five accused will plead not guilty to the charges and claim trial, advocates who would represent them, said earlier.

The gangrape and brutalization of a paramedical student on Dec 16 night on a moving bus by six men has shocked the nation and triggered a wave of protests.

The girl died in a Singapore hospital after 13 days of fight. The male companion of the girl during the night of the crime later narrated the unspeakable torture on the girl on the bus by six men who also used an iron rod to brutalize her.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday said he is not aware that the Delhi Police have asked young women to return home early in their notices placed outside educational institutions in the national capital.

On Delhi Police asking young women to return home early by putting up notices, Shinde told media: I do not have such information."

The South Delhi Police on Thursday placed notices outside educational institutions here where one suggestion said girls should go 'straight' to their homes from schools and colleges, media reports said.

The Delhi Police, however, said the notices were placed by the South Delhi Police as an 'awareness drive' and they have not authorized the signs.
