Operation Blue Star general attacked

London: Lieutenant General Kuldeep Singh Brar, who led a raid against Sikh militants holed up inside the Golden Temple in 1984 known as Operation Blue Star, has been stabbed in London.
The 78-year-old, thought to still be a target for extremist Sikhs, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries when the assailants attacked him, the BBC reported.
The Indian High Commission said that three men assaulted Brar outside his hotel and the General, who had to undergo a surgery and is now recuperating.
He is expected to return to India on Tuesday.
Speaking to an Indian news channel, Brar's wife said: "We were walking down Oxford Circus at 10.30 pm in the night. Three bearded men attacked him and tried to slash his throat. We cannot say if they were Sikh. I was standing by watching and called for help. The ambulance was there within minutes and we rushed him to hospital."
A decorated soldier, Brar has been on hit-list of many Sikh militant groups for his role in leading the June 5, 1984, raid on Golden Temple in Amritsar that had been taken hostage by militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale demanding a separate state for Sikhs called Khalistan.
Even though reports on the exact number of people killed vary but it is thought about 1,000 people were killed in the encounter, including women and children on pilgrimage and soldiers.
