Rahul Gandhi visits relief camps in Assam

Guwahati, Sept 11 (IBNS): All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) area of Assam and met victims of ethnic violence in relief camps.

According to reports, Gandhi, who is on a day-long visit to Assam, went to Kathalguri and Gambaribeel relief camps.

He also discussed the current situation of the violence-hit state with Bodoland Territorial Council leaders, reports said.

The Congress leader was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhubaneswar Kalita.

He is likely to visit two relief camps in Dhubri district, party sources said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had earlier visited the violence-hit areas of the east Indian state.

More than 70 people were killed in the Assam violence between Bodos and Muslim settlers since July and countless were rendered homeless and sheltered in relief camps.
