Ford to build Rs 4000 cr-factory in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: American autormaker Ford Motor Company on Thursday announced plans to build a Rs 4,000 crore-production plant in Gujarat by 2014, in a bid to match rivals in the world’s second-fastest growing auto market.

The company’s second plant in the country, which will double Ford’s investment in India, will start rolling out 240,000 cars and 270,000 engines and directly create 5,000 jobs for the business friendly-state when it goes operational in three years.

The factory has been planned in Sanand, the same city where Indian carmaker Tata Motors chose to relocate its plant for Tata Nano, billed as the world’s cheapest car, after it faced hiccups in West Bengal over land acquisition.

“There are many factors why we chose Gujarat over the others but the main reason is the demographics,” said Michael Bonaham, president and managing director, Ford India.

“Investing in a western state gives us proximity to the North, which is the biggest market for cars. It helps bring down logistic costs. Further, Gujarat boasts of good infrastructure and a sizeable port which works well for our export strategy,” he said.

Ford’s facility will come up on 460 acres of land while component suppliers are expected to set up shop around it.

The company plans to launch eight new models in India by 2015 to meet its targets of increasing sales by 50 percent worldwide to 8 million vehicles per year by that time. The company expects 60-70 percent of its growth to come from Asia Pacific in the next 10 years.
