Mumbai: A special police team will probe the killing of a senior Mumbai journalist by the underworld on Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan decided on Sunday after an emergency meeting at his residence.

Amid reports that the killing of J Dey, the Investigations Editor of Mumbai's leading tabloid Mid Day, in broad daylight by four gunmen could be handiwork of the Dawood gang, the Mumbai police is probing various angles.

Sunday's meeting at the CM's house was attended by Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy and other senior officials.

While the slain journalist's family is being given police protection, the state government said in future other journalists would be given such security too.

R R Patil said the details of such protection will be announced later.

Reports said the senior journalist- who was known as J Dey more than his full name Jyotirmoy Dey- was receiving death threats.

Dey, who was 56, received five bullet injuries and then was rushed to Hiranandani Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police, reports said, are examining the CCTV footage of Crisil House located opposite the crime scene though owing to rains during the incident, the footage is not too clear

J Dey, who used to write on the underworld, was considered a key resource person on the matter.

Dey had penned books on the underworld. They are "Zero Dial: The Dangerous World of Informers" and "Khallas".

He previously worked with Indian Express and Hindustan Times.

Maharashtra Home minister R R Patil said the police will go to the bottom of the crime in next two days and teach the perpetrators a lesson.
