Police storm Ramdev hunger strike

New Delhi: A large contingent of police stormed the Ramlila Maidan early Sunday in an apparent attempt to shut down Baba Ramdev’s hunger strike campaign, as sources within the government said the yoga guru was to be taken out of Delhi.
Media reports said the huge police force arrived on scene with several top level officers, including six deputy commissioners, seemingly trying to take in Ramdev, claiming that the hunger strike was illegal.
Police sources said that Baba and his associates organising the anti-graft ‘fast-unto-death’ campaign had sought permission to organise an yoga camp and not a hunger strike, in an attempt to put pressure on the government.
Television images showed the guru trying to evade the police by first running right into a thicket of supporters preventing access to officers. A few minutes later he ran back on the stage as his supporters and body guards formed a human chain to stop the police from reaching Baba.
