Bill Gates offers India family planning help

New Delhi: Microsoft chairman and philanthropist Bill Gates on Tuesday offered to help the Indian Health Ministry with comprehensive family planning services through his foundation.

Bill and wife Melinda Gates on Tuesday met with Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and said that their foundation would be happy to help with comprehensive family planning services as the Ministry would deem fit, a government news release informed.

Since transitioning from working full-time work for Microsoft to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2006, Gates has been closely associated several healthcare, poverty alleviation and IT access programmes.

During the meeting held at health ministry on Tuesday, issues relating to Immunisation programme, vaccines, polio vaccination efforts, HIV control and capacity building were discussed.

"Bill Gates appreciated the efforts made by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in containing the polio and HIV cases and noted that intensification of efforts for eradicating polio are very evident by the 2010 figures now available," said a statement from the ministry.

Azad thanked the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for extending help in bringing about innovations in health, development and learning to the Indian community and urged them to continue their support for the fourth phase of the National AIDS Control Programme.
