New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Hamid Ansari have condoled the death of the former Kerala Chief Minister and Congress veteran K Karunakaran on Thursday.
In a condolence message to the Karunakaran's son Muralidharan, the Singh said, "It is with deep sorrow and a sense of great personal loss that I have learnt of the passing away of your father Shri K. Karunakaran."
"I had the privilege of benefitting from Karunakaranji’s wisdom and experience many times. He was generous with his advice, which was always sagacious. I will miss him as a senior leader, a valued colleague in the Congress party and a close friend," he said.
In his message, Ansari said, “I am deeply grieved to learn about the sad demise of Shri K. Karunakaran, former Chief Minister of Kerala, former Union Minister, veteran leader and Parliamentarian."
"He had worked for the upliftment of poor and the downtrodden and earned the respect and admiration of the people of his state for his dedication and sense of public service. His services to the country shall always be remembered," he said.
"I am deeply pained to learn of the demise of Mr. K Karunakaran, my good friend and colleague for so many decades," External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said in his message.
He added, "During his several innings as Chief Minister of Kerala, he was instrumental in bringing about rapid socio-economic development of the state. I convey my heartfelt condolences to members of his family and friends as well as the people of Kerala."
The senior leader, who was 93, was hospitalised on Dec 10. He was later put on ventilator support. He suffered a stroke and died.
