Festive mood overwhelms Kolkata on Mahasaptami

Kolkata: The colourful night of Mahasasthi finally faded out to give way to the dawn of Mahasaptami and with this the festive mood of Durga Puja has started to reach the crescendo from Thursday.

The entire city of Kolkata is bubbling with joy and enthusiasm; be it a child or an adult...everyone has zeroed on his/her plans to make Mahasaptami all the more special.

But amidst all the celebrations, the true colour of the festival lies in the worship of Goddess Durga and the various rituals associated with it.

The main ritual on Mahasaptami is Nabapatrika snan or Kolabou snan (bathing of banana bride) and pravesh (entrance of Goddess in the mandap-the place of worship).

At dawn, stem of a banana plant with nine leaves, is bathed and decked up like a new bride and draped in a red and white saree.

It is then placed beside Ganesha idol as his bride. With this, takes place pran pratistha ritual (the ritual to breath life into the Durga idol).

Thus, the fervour of Durga Puja-the biggest festival of Bengalis-started on Thursday amid beating of 'dhak' (local drums), pandalhopping and cultural functions at various marquees.
