Not much progress in model suicide probe

Mumbai: A city court here on Tuesday directed the police not to arrest Gautam Vora, supposed boyfriend of model Viveka Babajee, who killed herself on Friday, without a 72-hour notice.
Disposing off the stockbroker's anticipatory bail application which was issued a day earlier, the court said it was 'not maintainable' as the police had not yet registered a case of abetment to suicide against Vora.
Principal Judge of Mumbai City Civil and Sessions Court M.L. Tahaliyani asked Vora to 'cooperate' with the police in the investigation and appear at the Khar police station to record his statement whenever required.
Tahaliyani also reportedly asserted that the investigation was not going in the right direction and it first needs to form an opinion and then start collecting evidence.
According to reports, the police said it has no intention to arrest Vora as of now, as it was still too early to ascertain if the model's death was 'actually' suicide and that there was any abetment involved.
Summoned for interrogation by the police on Monday, Vora, fearing arrest, had filed an anticipatory bail in the session's court.
Vora is likely to be grilled on his role, if any, leading to the suicide and his relationship with the 37-year-old model.
However, after the court hearing, Vora said he was 'innocent' and was not the reason for her suicide.
According to reports, the Mauritius-born model spent some time with Vora on Thursday night. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her apartment in a posh building in Bandra (West) on Friday night.
The police recovered several letters addressed by Viveka to Vora from her flat. In one of her letters, Babajee had written, "You killed me Gautam Vora", said local media.
Vora, in his bail application, claimed that he came to know about Viveka through social networking web site Facebook; but even though they soon became friends, there was 'nothing more' to the relationship.
He claimed that even though he found her to be depressed, he never suspected she would commit suicide.
Vora said, when he met Viveka at her flat on Thursday she was disturbed about her financial losses and that she was smoking and drinking a lot.
According to sources, the police is suspecting that the two had a fight; Vora claims he had asked her not to drink.
A former Miss Mauritius, Babajee shot to prominence in her modelling career, following a television commercial for Kamasutra condom in the 1990s. She had also acted in a few films, but those were highly forgettable roles.
In recent years, she had set up an event management and fashion choreography firm, but was not doing well financially.
On Monday, Babajee's mother and three sisters took possession of her body from the Cooper Hospital and later she was cremated in Juhu.
