One of New Zealand’s biggest importers and distributors of Indian food items is hoping Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters’ visit to India next week will boost bilateral trade.

A mutually beneficial trade relationship between New Delhi and Wellington will be great news for the thousands of Indian New Zealanders, says Suneet Gupta, Director and Founder of Auckland-based Kashish Foods.

“The deputy prime minister is scheduled to meet India’s foreign minister S Jaishankar. This will provide a big boost to the long-standing talk about a free trade deal between the two countries.”

Kashish Foods, owned by mothership MG International Limited, is a leading importer and distributor of Indian food ingredients and brands in Aotearoa. Their main products include rice, lentils, beans, spices, and oils.

Gupta is betting big on India’s export industry having returned from Gulfood 2024 in Dubai, one of the world’s biggest expos for the food industry.

“In going to Gulfood, our aim was to form new partnerships to help with the cost of living crisis in NZ. It was a proud moment for me to see such a strong Indian presence there, as more than 350 Indian companies gathered to showcase their diverse array of products.

“It shows that India is becoming a mighty and powerful force to be reckoned with. It shows India's role as a global leader in the food supply industry,” Gupta says.

This year’s Gulfood expo brought together more than 5,500 leading food and beverage companies, showcasing over 150,000 new products from more than 190 countries.

At the heart of India's representation was the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, whose pavilion boasted more than 70 exhibitors - from fragrant spices to wholesome grains, India's offerings catered to a wide range of tastes and opportunities.

Kashish Foods supplies some of the best-selling Indian grocery products like rice, lentils and mango pulp across stores in New Zealand.
