New Zealand is fast becoming a preferred overseas study destination for Indian students, driven by policy reforms, improved visa processes, and a national strategy linking education with employability. A combination of faster visa processing, simplified applications, and stronger post-study work rights is attracting growing interest from Indian families seeking clarity and opportunity abroad.
According to a report by India Today, recent data reveal the extent of this shift. Indian enrolments in New Zealand jumped 34 per cent in 2024, reaching about 10,640 students between January and August, a sharp rebound from the pandemic downturn. The New Zealand government aims to double the economic value of international education to NZD 7.2 billion by 2034, signalling a long-term commitment to nurturing global talent.
Visa Clarity and Work Rights Boost Confidence
Authorities have streamlined the student visa system by digitising key processes, reducing application errors, and offering predictable approval timelines, a significant relief for families managing travel and housing plans. The average visa decision time is now two to three weeks, making New Zealand one of the fastest destinations for Indian applicants.
Post-study work rights have also been refined, providing three-year work eligibility for master’s graduates and clearer pathways for Level 8 postgraduate diploma holders. From November 2025, international students will be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week while studying, a policy expected to ease financial pressures and enhance real-world experience, India Today reported.

New Zealand’s education policies are increasingly aligned with its labour market needs. The Green List identifies high-demand occupations and offers faster routes to residence for qualified graduates. This alignment ensures that students’ academic choices connect directly to employment opportunities, especially in engineering, health sciences, and data analytics, reported India Today.

With approval rates for Indian student visas improving to about 75 per cent in early 2025, up from 59 per cent the previous year, New Zealand’s policies are clearly paying off. In a competitive international landscape where other destinations are tightening immigration rules, New Zealand is doing the opposite: cutting friction, clarifying pathways, and signalling a long-term welcome, India Today reported.
