Taxi driver Gagandeep Singh left with eight broken ribs after crash involving Cliff Curtis
The taxi driver seriously injured in an Auckland waterfront crash involving Hollywood actor Cliff Curtis suffered eight broken ribs, a fractured hip and internal bleeding, and has been told to stay off work for 60 days, The New Zealand Herald has reported.
Gagandeep Singh was inside his parked Toyota Prius when it was struck by a Tesla at the intersection of Jellicoe and Halsey streets at about 10.30pm on September 23.
Curtis, 58, has been summonsed to appear in the Auckland District Court on October 15 on charges of reckless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol.
Singh told Herald he suffered eight broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a lower hip fracture, injuries to his hands and a head wound that required stitches.
He also suffered internal bleeding involving his lungs and required oxygen for about five days.
“With that pressure, my chest got pressed and my lungs bled inside,” he told the Herald. “Because of that, I couldn’t breathe at that time, and I forgot everything that had happened.”
Singh said he had been waiting for passengers when the crash occurred. He estimated the force of the collision pushed his Prius up to 5m into a concrete bench.
He was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters before being taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.
Singh also suffered a concussion and short-term memory loss and told Herald he still could not remember how the crash occurred.
“I don’t know from where the car came and how they hit,” he said.
He has since been discharged from hospital but said his doctor had ordered him to remain on bed rest for 60 days, meaning he cannot work.
“I’m sitting in at home and I don’t know what will happen,” he said. “I’m the only child of my parents. I have responsibilities, so it’s really hard.”
Another person was taken to hospital in a moderate condition following the crash, while at least one other person suffered minor injuries.
Curtis confirmed in a statement to Stuff that he suffered internal injuries and was hospitalised following the crash.
In the statement, Curtis said he assisted other people injured in the collision with first aid until emergency services arrived. He also said he was “collaborating fully with relevant authorities”.
Police have confirmed that a 58-year-old man was summonsed to appear in the Auckland District Court on October 15 on charges of reckless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol.
