NZ, India To Strengthen Forestry Ties, Drive Export Growth

Recent trade figures show a sharp rise in New Zealand's forestry exports to India

New Zealand will host inbound and outbound forestry trade missions with India this year in a move aimed at bolstering bilateral ties and unlocking more value from the forestry and wood processing sectors, Forestry, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay announced on 13 June, 2025.

Speaking at the Fieldays Forestry Hub, McClay highlighted India’s growing significance as a trading partner for New Zealand’s forestry industry.

“India is one of the fastest-growing markets for our forestry exports – and we’re focused on turning that growth into long-term opportunity for New Zealand exporters,” he said.

New call-to-action

Recent trade figures show a sharp rise in New Zealand's forestry exports to India. Wood exports have increased from $9.5 million in 2023 to an estimated $76.5 million this year. Pulp exports have also seen strong growth, more than doubling from $20 million to $45.6 million.

“Increased engagement with India is already delivering results. We’re now building on that momentum with a targeted sector focus — including hosting an Indian delegation in New Zealand and planning a Minister-led mission to India later this year,” McClay said.

The inbound mission, backed by industry partners, will highlight New Zealand’s sustainable forestry management and world-class systems. Meanwhile, the outbound mission aims to strengthen both commercial and government-level partnerships.

“Our relationship with India is a priority, and forestry is a key part of that. The goal is clear: to grow the market, remove barriers, and drive better returns back to New Zealand’s foresters and processors,” McClay said.

India and New Zealand officially launched negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Todd McClay visited India in May 2025 to hold the first round of talks for a comprehensive India–New Zealand free trade agreement, calling it “an important step forward.”

The announcement came ahead of a bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in March 2025. The decision to initiate FTA talks was formalised during a meeting between India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand's Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay on March 16, 2025.
