Team India scripted history on Sunday night after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup title, defeating the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final held in Ahmedabad. Reported by Tushar Mamgaain from NDTV.

Batting first, the India national cricket team put up a massive total of 255/5 in 20 overs. Sanju Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 off 46 balls.

New call-to-action

In response, New Zealand failed to build momentum as Axar Patel picked up three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah delivered an outstanding spell with four wickets, restricting the Kiwis to 159.

However, amid India’s dominant performance, pacer Arshdeep Singh was briefly involved in a controversial moment after one of his throws struck New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell.

The incident occurred in the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings. Mitchell had played the ball straight back to the bowler, but Arshdeep attempted a direct throw at the stumps which accidentally hit the batter on the thigh.

A visibly frustrated Mitchell exchanged words with the bowler before India captain Suryakumar Yadav stepped in to calm the situation.

After the match, Arshdeep clarified that he immediately apologised to Mitchell and the issue was resolved, with both players later seen sharing a light moment.

“My throw reverse-swung a bit too much and it hit his body, so I told him that I didn't hit him intentionally," said Arshdeep during the post-match presentation.

Speaking about the team’s confidence throughout the tournament, he credited the squad’s depth and match-winning ability.

New call-to-action

“And it's a fantastic team, there are match-winners everywhere in this team, so there was belief from the start that we would perform well, and whatever the result is, that's just the topping on the cake,” he told broadcasters after the game.

Despite contributing to India’s strong bowling performance, Arshdeep admitted that the magnitude of the achievement had not yet fully sunk in.

“I don't really know what the emotion feels like right now, sir. At the moment it feels good because we're winning, but in two or three days we'll know when the emotions sink in, how it actually feels.”
