Measles Alert: Students Sent Home

Health NZ confirms measles case at Auckland Grammar School, contact tracing under way

Auckland Grammar School has asked all Year 9 and Year 10 students to stay home after a person with measles was found to have been on campus on October 24.Reported by RNZ

Principal Tim O’Connor confirmed that the school made the decision in consultation with public health officials. “Students in Forms 3 and 4 may have been in contact with this person,” he said in an email to parents.

New call-to-action

Health authorities have begun contact tracing and are checking immunisation records to identify students who may not have received two doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age.

O’Connor said most vaccination records were already on file from enrolment, which helped the process move quickly.

“Public health will communicate directly with families whose records are incomplete,” he added.

Senior students were not affected as they were either sitting exams or on study leave at the time. Those who are unvaccinated will not be allowed on campus until it’s considered safe.

O’Connor did not disclose whether the infected person was a student or staff member but said he hoped Year 9 and 10 students could return by Monday.
