INZ shifts Family of temporary visa holder applications to new system

INZ shifts Family of temporary visa holder applications to new system

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will transition family visa applications for temporary visa holders to its enhanced Immigration Online system from June 1, 2026, as part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s immigration services.

The move forms part of INZ’s “Our Future Services” programme, aimed at creating a more efficient and user-friendly visa system. The initiative seeks to simplify application processes, reduce waiting times, and improve communication for applicants.

The transition covers a range of specific visa categories, including dependent child student visas; under Work Visas - Partner of a Worker Work Visa, Partner of Military Work Visa, Partner of a Student Work Visa, Partner of an NZ Scholarship Student Work Visa; under Visitor Visas - Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa, Child of a Worker Visitor Visa, Partner of a Student Visitor Visa , Child of a Student Visitor Visa ,Partner of Military Visitor Visa, Child of Military Visitor Visa.

INZ has already rolled out the enhanced system for several visa types since its introduction in 2021, including international student visas, visitor visas, accredited employer work visas, and permanent resident visas.

From June 1, all new applications for the affected visa categories will automatically be directed through the updated platform. However, applications already submitted through the existing system will continue to be processed. Applicants with draft applications in the current system will have the option to complete and submit them or start a new application using the upgraded system.

New call-to-action

INZ said further details would be provided closer to the transition date, including updates to its website to guide applicants through the changes. It also indicated that the future of paper-based applications for these visa types is under review.

As part of the redesign, INZ has worked with immigration professionals to improve the overall application experience. The updated system will feature clearer guidance on visa options, aiming to address confusion around selecting the correct visa type.

A new dynamic application form will tailor questions to individual applicants and provide specific instructions on required information and supporting documents. Officials say this is expected to reduce delays caused by incomplete applications.

The upgraded system will also introduce Identity Document Reader (IDR) technology, allowing applicants to scan their passports and automatically populate key details into the application form. INZ said this would improve data accuracy and reduce errors that could affect travel.

The transition is part of a phased rollout, with other family visa categories expected to move to the enhanced system at later stages.
