India and New Zealand have discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture, with officials from both countries agreeing to explore the possibility of formalising collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The discussions took place during a meeting between Ms Melanie Phillips, Agricultural Counsellor, and Commodore Andrew Dowling, Defence Advisor from the New Zealand High Commission to India, and officials from India's Department of Fisheries.

The New Zealand delegation met Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries), and Dr Surabhi Rai, Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries), to discuss a range of areas for potential cooperation.

Topics covered included efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, strengthening bilateral trade in fisheries and aquaculture products, biosecurity and animal quarantine measures, knowledge exchange, deep-sea fishing capacity building, and joint research on high-yield seed production.

Both sides expressed interest in enhancing collaboration across these areas and agreed to explore the possibility of strengthening ties through an MoU.
