Four accused in alleged shoplifting ring stealing meat, cosmetics & clothing
Police in New Zealand have dismantled an alleged shoplifting ring accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods across the lower North Island, following a traffic stop in Levin earlier this week that led to four arrests.
According to a report by 1News, the arrests came after officers travelling through Paraparaumu responded to reports of a shoplifting incident in progress at around 5.15pm on Thursday. Authorities were told that a vehicle was parked outside a retailer at a local mall while three individuals allegedly entered the store and stole clothing.
Sergeant Nathan Hessell said, "The offenders, who were aggressive and hostile when confronted by staff, then fled to the vehicle with several stolen items and drove away from the scene," adding that the same group had allegedly taken $1700 worth of meat products from a nearby supermarket at about the same time, as reported by 1News.
Police were able to locate the vehicle shortly afterwards in Levin and signalled for it to stop. According to Hessell, one of the occupants attempted to escape on foot.
"Police chased that person, and he was apprehended and arrested. The vehicle was searched and some of the stolen meat and clothing were located in the vehicle, to the value of $300. These offenders are off-loading their stolen items to family and friends as soon as they can," as quoted by 1News.
Further investigations linked the group and their vehicle to multiple incidents of shoplifting and petrol drive-offs at various retail outlets over recent months.
Hessell said, "The same group of offenders had also allegedly stolen around $4000 worth of meat and $1260 worth of beauty products and cosmetics on [Wednesday]. None of the property stolen has been recovered," 1News has quoted.
Police believe additional suspects are still involved and efforts are underway to identify and locate them.
"Police have several suspects nominated for the outstanding offenders," 1News has quoted.
Among those arrested, a 29-year-old man has been charged with shoplifting, trespass, and driving while disqualified. Two women, aged 18 and 19, are facing multiple shoplifting charges and have been granted bail to appear in Levin District Court next week. A 16-year-old has also been arrested and is set to appear in the Levin Youth Court, 1News has reported.
All four individuals have been released on strict bail conditions, including curfews, restrictions on associating with one another, and a ban from entering retail stores.
