A former charitable trust chief executive has appeared in court facing multiple criminal charges over allegations he misappropriated more than $2.1 million from several organisations.
According to a report by Stuff, Matekino Marshall has been charged by the Serious Fraud Office following an investigation into his conduct while working with two charitable trusts and another entity.
Marshall pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared in the Manukau District Court on Thursday, according to a statement from the SFO.
Prosecutors allege Marshall misappropriated $547,408 while serving as chief executive of the Ngāti Tamaoho Trust. In relation to those allegations, he faces three representative charges of obtaining by deception, one representative charge of accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose, and four representative charges of dishonestly using a document, Stuff has reported.
According to Stuff, the SFO further alleges Marshall misappropriated $1,454,895 while acting as chairperson of the Port Waikato Community Health and Support Services Trust. He has been charged with accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose in connection with those funds.
Additional charges relate to the alleged misappropriation of $120,000 from another entity. The amount was later repaid, Stuff has reported.
Marshall is also accused of using a forged document to maintain VIP Black Card membership status at SkyCity Casino.
Following his court appearance, Marshall was remanded on bail. A six-week trial has been scheduled to begin on July 26, 2027.
