Cricket legends join outcry over Imran Khan’s health

Legendary Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, along with 12 other former international captains, have voiced serious concerns over the health of jailed cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan. Reported by News on Air.

The group of 14 ex-captains sent a letter to the Pakistan government urging that the 73-year-old be provided adequate medical care, transparent legal proceedings and dignified treatment in accordance with international standards.

New call-to-action

Reports have suggested that the 1992 World Cup-winning captain and former Pakistan Prime Minister has lost nearly 85 per cent of vision in his right eye, allegedly due to medical neglect while being held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

In the letter, the signatories stated that as fellow cricketers who understand the values of fair play, honour and respect beyond the boundary rope, they believe a figure of Imran Khan’s stature should receive treatment consistent with the dignity owed to a former national leader and global sporting icon. The letter also urged authorities to uphold the principles of decency and justice.

The appeal has been signed by Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh and John Wright, in addition to Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2023 in a corruption case.
