Cliff Curtis excused from first court appearance after Auckland crash
Kiwi actor Cliff Curtis has been excused from attending his first court appearance after a crash in central Auckland last month left three people injured.
The Avatar star was due to appear in Auckland District Court on October 15. However, in a statement released today, Curtis confirmed he would not attend as he "continues to recover at home from internal injuries," as quoted by 1News.
"I made a devastating mistake, and I'll have to live with the consequences and do what I can to address the harm caused. I am deeply sorry. My thoughts are with the injured taxi driver and his family," Curtis said, as quoted by 1News.
The collision occurred on September 23 at the intersection of Jellicoe Street and Halsey Street, leaving Curtis’ Tesla and a taxi badly damaged.
According to the NZ Herald, emergency services had to cut open the taxi to reach its occupants.
Two people were taken to hospital, one in a serious condition and the other in a moderate condition. A third person sustained minor injuries.
According to 1News, a representative for the 58-year-old actor previously confirmed that Curtis had suffered internal injuries and was admitted to hospital following the crash.
Curtis, known for his roles in Once Were Warriors and Avatar, helped provide first aid at the scene until emergency services arrived, 1News has reported.
Police confirmed last Tuesday that Curtis had been charged with reckless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol.
