A house fire in central Christchurch has been brought under control after thick smoke spread across parts of the city on Sunday afternoon.

According to a report by 1News, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) was called to the blaze at a single-storey property on Fitzgerald Ave at around 3.22 pm.

Three crews from Christchurch City and Woolston responded to the incident.

"FENZ have been on the scene for 26 minutes and are in the process of extinguishing it. The fire is contained but put up a lot of smoke when it was fully alight," a spokesperson told 1News.

FENZ said there were no reports of anyone being inside the house when the fire broke out.

Images from the scene showed firefighters wearing breathing apparatus working to extinguish the blaze, while heavy smoke rose from the white weatherboard property, as reported by 1News.

Police also cordoned off part of Fitzgerald Ave as emergency crews continued their response.
