Auckland Unites For World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025

Communities from across Tāmaki Makaurau came together at The Trusts Arena on 15 June, 2025 to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025 with a landmark multicultural event that celebrated aroha, dignity, and respect for seniors.
The event, titled “Treasuring Our Seniors”, was a first-of-its-kind initiative in Aotearoa New Zealand, led by Jeet Suchdev QSM JP, Chairperson of Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust, and Sister Jessica Phuang QSM, Ethnic Responsiveness Manager at New Zealand Police. It united more than 40 ethnic organisations, community service providers, and police representatives in a collective call to action against elder abuse and a reaffirmation of support for senior wellbeing.
The day was marked by colourful cultural performances, diverse food stalls, and a variety of workshops focused on elder rights and safety. Community services from across Auckland hosted information booths offering guidance and resources to families and older individuals. The atmosphere was festive yet deeply meaningful, with families and seniors engaging in celebration and awareness side by side.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Casey Costello, Minister for Seniors; Melissa Lee, List Member of Parliament, Mt Albert ; Superintendent Scott Gemmell, Waitematā District Commander; Superintendent Rakesh Naidoo, National Partnerships Manager for New Zealand Police; Dr Carlos Cheung, Member of Parliament for Mt Roskill; and Michelle Clayton, Chief Executive Officer of Family Action.
