Two security guards in Dunedin were assaulted in unrelated incidents, one allegedly bitten and the other punched, prompting police arrests in both cases, as reported by Stuff.

Police said the first incident occurred at the Chemist Warehouse in Meridian Mall just before noon on Thursday. A 49-year-old man allegedly directed racist comments at a security guard before being asked to leave by the store manager. According to Sergeant Matthew Lee, the man became aggressive, knocking multiple items off shelves and smashing a container, as reported by Stuff

As a security guard attempted to escort him from the store, the man allegedly bit the guard on the arm and tried to punch him in the head. Police located the man nearby and arrested him. He has been charged with assault and wilful damage and was bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date.

In a separate case, police arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with a July 13 shoplifting and assault at the Regent St Night ‘n Day. On that day, the man allegedly stole a pie and a sausage roll before punching a store security officer in the head and fleeing the scene.

Lee said the suspect was later identified through CCTV footage. He has been charged with assault and multiple shoplifting offences and is also due to appear in court.
