A man and a woman accused of filling three shopping trolleys with goods at a Kmart store in Botany before allegedly leaving without paying have been arrested, with police recovering about $400 worth of stolen items.

A 35-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of shoplifting and driving without a licence. She is due to appear in Manukau District Court on Christmas Eve.

Senior Sergeant Simon Cornish, of Counties Manukau East Police, said officers made a number of enquiries before locating the vehicle at an address on Great South Road in Manurewa.

“Police have made a number of enquiries and subsequently located the vehicle at an address in Great South Road, Manurewa.

“Two people were quickly arrested and about $400 worth of goods were recovered from the vehicle.

“This was great work by our frontline staff who arrived quickly, received a detailed account of what had occurred and the vehicle involved and were able to bring this to a close.

New call-to-action

“Christmas is a time for giving, not taking, and this serves as a reminder that people who choose to take part in this type of crime will be held to account.”

Police were called to the store just after 10.30am yesterday following a report that dozens of items had been taken. Officers were given a detailed description of the pair and the vehicle they were seen leaving in.

Police have reminded the public to report suspicious or illegal activity, advising people to contact 111 if an incident is happening now, or 105 if reporting after the fact.
