An aggravated robbery occurred at an Auckland jewellery store in Mt Roskill on 14 October 2025. Roop Darshan, located on White Swan Road, was allegedly targeted by masked robbers, according to a customer present at the scene.
“We were in the store and all of a sudden people started screaming and running and we saw three men in black with masks on,” the customer, who wished to remain anonymous, told Radio Tarana.
“We ran and hid into the storeroom,” they added.
The customer also claimed the "masked men had guns".
Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill, Area Investigations Manager for Auckland City West, told The Indian Weekender that at around 3.40pm, a group of offenders entered the business on White Swan Road, reportedly carrying weapons, though not firearms.
In a second video reported by Radio Tarana, footage showed a crowd gathered outside, apparently filmed after the alleged robbery.
“A number of items were taken before the offenders left in a vehicle, which was later recovered by police and will undergo forensic examination,” Detective Senior Sergeant Darvill said.
Sunny Kaushal, chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Victims of Retail Crime, said the problem persists because some criminals believe there are no consequences for their actions.
He said the criminals think that, “Police won’t come when called, and they think even if arrested, courts may let them go."
Kaushal highlighted that police are actively responding, and the government is considering legislative changes based on the board’s advice.
He told The Indian Weekender that "successive governments have allowed the retail crime problem to grow into an epidemic. It fact it has doubled since 2019."
However, he said that the progress is being made and the situation is turning around.
“For example, ram raids are down 85%, serious youth offending down 13%, violent crime has 29,000 fewer victims, and police patrols are up 40%,” he said.
He acknowledged that fully tackling the problem will take time but added that increased police numbers, focused law enforcement, and legislative changes will help restore deterrence.
“I think we will continue to see offending rates fall as we rebuild a justice system that can actually hold offenders to account,” Kaushal said.
Police said they continue to investigate the aggravated robbery at the commercial premises. Anyone with information is asked to contact police online at 105.police.govt.nz or call 105.
