From India to New Zealand: A Journey of Purpose, Resilience, and Community

Migration is not just crossing the border; it is about transforming identity, purpose, and belonging. My journey from India to New Zealand has been one of resilience, motherhood, ambition, and community service.

Arriving in New Zealand was both exciting and overwhelming. Like many migrants, I carried dreams of professional growth and stability. Before coming to NZ, I worked in the supply chain industry for 14 years and assumed that once I land in NZ, I would get a fancy office job in the same industry. But dreams alone are not enough, and migration humbles you.

Settling into a new country means understanding a different legal framework, workplace culture, communication style, and social environment. It means rebuilding your professional identity from the ground up. Every small achievement, from securing professional recognition to building networks, felt hard-earned.

In the initial years, I did every job I could to adjust, to survive, and to understand the system. Those experiences shaped me in ways I did not anticipate. They taught me the dignity of labour, patience, and the value of persistence.

As a migrant woman and a young mother, the challenges were layered. There was the silent pressure to prove myself — not only to the world but also to myself. I had left behind familiarity, professional recognition, and a strong network. Starting again was emotionally demanding. However, one thing that never wavered was my belief in the decision we had made to build our future here.

In 2016, I joined an immigration advisory firm — a moment I consider the turning point of my life. Stepping into the immigration advisory field gave my journey a new direction and deeper meaning. The responsibility in this profession is immense. Behind every visa application is a dream — a family hoping to reunite, a student aspiring for education, an employer relying on talent, or a skilled professional seeking stability.

New call-to-action

Working closely with migrants gave me a front-row view of their emotional and practical struggles. I understood their anxiety while waiting for visa outcomes. I understood the uncertainty, the fear of rejection, and the hope tied to every decision. Because I had lived that journey myself, empathy became my greatest professional strength. For me, immigration advisory work is not just paperwork or policy; it is about people and their futures.

Over the past ten years, I have changed both emotionally and professionally. The challenges of building credibility in a highly regulated industry were not small. Establishing trust as a migrant woman in business required consistency, transparency, and unwavering ethical standards. It required long hours, continuous learning, and resilience to set my footprints

But truly every obstacle strengthened my confidence and sharpened my perspective.

As my professional journey evolved, I realised my purpose extended beyond individual client representation. Community engagement became central to my work. Supporting new migrants, mentoring young professionals, guiding families unfamiliar with New Zealand systems — these became natural extensions of my role.

New Zealand has given me the space to grow, rebuild, and contribute. In return, I feel a deep responsibility to uphold professional integrity and serve the community with dedication. There are always new goals, new regulations to master, and new challenges to navigate. But if there is one lesson my journey has taught me, it is that resilience, combined with purpose, can transform uncertainty into opportunity.

My journey is still evolving...

To every migrant woman starting her journey — your challenges do not define your limits. They shape your strength.
