Devotees of Lord Hanuman, a Hindu deity gathered in hundreds across different temples in New Zealand on Friday, April 17 to observe Hanuman Jayanti. This day marks the birth of Lord Hanuman as per the Hindu calendar, the lunar month of Chaitra.

Lord Hanuman is said to be an ardent devotee of Lord Ram and is regarded as one of the prominent heroes of the Indian super epic Ramayana.

Celebrations at Bhartiya Mandir on Balmoral Road

Bhartiya Mandir observes a Sundarkant Paath every Tuesday evening at the temple premises where devotees come in huge numbers, the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Friday garnered an even higher number of people for the day-long puja.

The prayers for the Hanuman Jayanti started at 10 a.m. as the temple flocked with devotees who came together with 51 kgs of Laddu and 51 kgs of Imarti (Indian sweets) as bhog for the puja.

The devotees with priest Govind Sharma and Upendrabhai Joshi raised the flag at the temple and proceeded with the Sunderkand Paath that continued till 12:30 in the afternoon followed by the recital of different hymns and Hanuman Chalisa.

Hanuman Chalisa is one of the most important hymns recited by the devotees of Lord Hanuman, and it is said that it protects a person from all kinds of troubles and supernatural elements.

“We are delighted to see such a huge gathering of people on Hanuman Jayanti- this shows the love amongst the devotees for Lord Hanuman, who protects them from calamities and brings relief in their troubles,” Pandit Govind Prasad Sharma from Bhartiya Mandir said.

“We recite Hanuman Chalisa and read parts of Sri Ramayana and Mahabharata every Tuesday evening when we dedicate a full evening towards the devotion of Lord Hanuman,” Pandir Sharma added.

Once the Sundarkand Paath was over, the devotees attended the Aarti ceremony after which they were served with lunch and other food arrangments made for them.

Hanuman Jayanti observed at Shri Ram Mandir, Henderson

Like Bhartiya Mandir, the Shri Ram Temple in Henderson too organised a massive celebration or observance on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on Friday, April 19.

The celebrations started with the Puja of the Hanuman idol built just beside the entrance of the temple where devotees showered flowers and also did a puja of Lord Ganesha. As a part of the puja, the priest put a floral garland on Lord Hanuman Idol followed by Roth Puja.

Some of the devotees stationed themselves inside the temple hall where members of the community recited hymns and chanted mantras in praise of Lord Hanuman. The devotees also Hanuman Katha and Bhusundi Ramayan Paath and performed Hanuman Jayanti Hawan directed by the priest of the temple.

A prayer group from Zimbabwe, Pushpanjali Bhajan Mandal also came to the temple and recited the Paath 11 times during the event.

Shri Radha Krishna Temple at Eden Terrace also observed a small celebratory event for Lord Hanuman on the Hanuman Jayanti.
