Summer camp workshops empower young minds

Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust hosted its 16th Annual Children & Youth Summer Camp in the second week of January 2018. The five-day programme is designed for the children aged between eight and 14 and has gained immense popularity amongst the children in the Indian community.

All the activities were conducted in Mt Roskill War Memorial Halls, their sports grounds, and the adjacent Bhartiya Samaj hall.

This year 110 students enrolled for the program mentored by 25 volunteers and teachers. This included a one-day outdoor picnic for the children to Cornwall Park in Auckland.

The idea behind such camps is to make the most of the summer holidays, which may otherwise be spent on unproductive activity like watching TV or playing video games.

Such workshops give children to try new activities and create new hobbies such as painting, drama, dance, sports, and aerobics, learning art and crafts, public speaking, extempore and spiritual workshops too.

All the workshops and programmes aimed to promote overall development of the young minds and to impart skills like personality development, leadership, community involvement and tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity at an early age.

Children aged between six and nine are given recitation lessons from the specialised mentors from Auckland Library and are later supplied with workbooks where they draw, colour, and write.

“The camp programme is a balance of academic enrichment in the morning and sports in the afternoon by a professional sports club,” Jeet Suchdev, chairperson of Bhartiya Samaj said.

The camp provides breakfast, lunch and evening snacks for the children all through the five days of the camp. The Summer camp initiative is also supported by Auckland Council, Auckland Library and NZ Police who help children learn new skills and safety tips to follow at house and outdoor.

“Children love staying at the camp, and on the last day of the camp, they just crave if workshops could continue for a few more days,” Roopa Suchdev, director of the children’s camp, said.
