Double ram raid on same night leaves dairy-owners, neighbours stunned

The owners of a dairy store and a liquor store located Central Auckland city suburbs are left stunned with the audacity of a group of young offenders who returned on the same night to ram-raid and break in their shops twice, taking cigarettes and liquor bottles and leaving behind huge financial hole and distress for them.

St Johns Dairy and Liquor Centre located on Remuera Road in St John’s suburb were ram raided twice on the night of Tuesday-Wednesday between 12.30 am and later around 2 am.

The dairy store is owned by a Kiwi-Indian and the liquor store is owned by an Asian ethnic migrant who were expectedly stunned and too distressed to speak with media on camera when the Indian Weekender reached on the location at the early hours of Wednesday, March 23.

However, behind the camera they were able to share their sense of frustration and revealed that the shop was also broken in recently in the month of December.

“When we checked video, we found out that a group of offenders had broken the doors of the shop around 12.30 am, and the same group of youngsters returned back around 2 pm,” owners of one of the stores said on the condition of anonymity.

The Indian Weekender also reached out to some of the stores in the neighbourhood, who expectedly were less keen to speak with the media but expressed concerns on the growing spate of retail crime in recent months.

As per a recent media report, the data released by police under the Official Information Act showed within the first 11 months of 2021, dairy and convenience store theft was up 30 per cent on 2020 figures, and burglaries were up nearly 20 per cent.

However, the police were making lesser arrests in the same period.

In terms of retail offences, Auckland was the worst hit region across the New Zealand with an increase of 25.8 per cent, followed by Waikato (19.7 per cent) and Christchurch (14.2 per cent).
