RIM gives in to India's concern on security

New Delhi: BlackBerry makers Research In Motion (RIM), averting a possible ban on its business in India from Tuesday, has offered the Indian government some solutions for lawful access on its data, the Home Ministry said on Monday.

"RIM have made certain proposals for lawful access by law enforcement agencies and these would be operationalised immediately," the Home Ministry said in a statement. "The feasibility of the solutions offered would be assessed thereafter."

The Indian government said that it would review the situation and that the Department of Telecommunications would submit its report within the next two months.

The security officials chaired by Union Home secretary G K Pillay met on Monday to take a final decision on BlackBerry services in the country, a day before an August 31 deadline for the firm to give security agencies access to its secure data.

The Canadian firm has been trying to find wiggle room for quite some time in a balancing act to maintain its growing business market in India and yet not set an example of giving in easily to the whims of governments.
