Punjab visit takes tragic turn as New Zealand-born toddler dies
A two-year-old boy born in New Zealand to Punjabi parents has died after an accidental fall in Punjab, India, according to a close family friend.
The family arrived in Punjab on October 11 to visit their hometown. The tragedy occurred just two months after the child’s second birthday, which he had celebrated with his grandmother, who was visiting from Punjab.
“Few days after the trip to Punjab, the child fell off from the bed accidentally while standing,” Manjinder Singh Basi, a close family friend, told The Indian Weekender.
According to Basi, the child was admitted to hospital, where he spent at least four days before passing away.
Basi said the child’s grandparents had planned an Akhand Path Sahib, a continuous reading of the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, next month to mark his birthday.
His uncle was also expected to arrive from Italy after the birth of his own son.
The family had also been looking forward to celebrating Lohri, a Punjabi harvest festival in January.
“The family of is going through a very difficult time,” Basi said.
“The family had just travelled to Punjab and it happened so suddenly. They are deeply saddened by the loss,” he said.
The child’s father, whose name The Indian Weekender has chosen not to publish for privacy reasons, came to New Zealand on a student visa and had been living in the country for 10 years, according to Basi. His wife joined him a few years later.
The incident has left the child’s family and friends in deep shock.
