A 36-year-old woman has been charged after the body of a newborn baby was discovered in Auckland’s Albert Park on Sunday morning, RNZ has reported.

Police confirmed the woman is facing a charge of concealing the dead body. She is scheduled to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.

The infant was found by a park worker around 7am, prompting an immediate police response.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthews said officers are continuing inquiries to establish the circumstances. “This investigation remains ongoing and Police are speaking with a number of people to establish the circumstances around what has occurred,” RNZ quoted, adding the incident would be confronting for the community.

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out on Monday to guide the next steps in the investigation. Police have confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the death.
