Homicide investigation underway after man dies in Central Hamilton
Police have begun a homicide investigation after a man was found dead at a property in central Hamilton on Tuesday evening.
According to a report by Eva Gallot and Ava Whitworth of Stuff, emergency services were dispatched to a Lake Crescent address around 6.15 pm following reports of a serious injury, police detective senior sergeant Stephen Ambler said. When officers arrived, they discovered two injured people at the scene.
“The initial victim has died at the scene. The second victim is in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital,” Ambler said. He confirmed police were continuing their inquiries at the property. “Cordons remain in place at the address as police work to determine who was involved and to locate them,” as quoted by Stuff.
Members of the public have been advised to expect a visible police presence in the area as investigations continue.
Nearby resident Imogen Moore said she was being driven home by friends when several police vehicles rushed past. “We don’t get that many cops hooning by, it’s usually quite quiet around here,” she said, Stuff has quoted.
The group later passed the scene and observed police officers standing over what they believed was a body. Imogen and her mother, Helen Moore, said they had heard a machete was involved in the incident.
Helen Moore said such violence was uncommon in the neighbourhood, describing the area as usually peaceful. “Round the lake is normally a nice place,” she said, adding that the property involved was “very nice, Eva Gallot and Ava Whitworth of Stuff have reported.
Earlier, Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed they were assisting police at the scene, but said no further information was available.
